Spreadable Media, Citizens, and Participatory Culture: Uses and Effects of Political Internet Memes
This dissertation addresses the intersection of spreadable digital content, political mobilization, and entertainment. Across three studies it examines the personal-political motivations for online engagement, factors related to conventional and unconventional political participation, and moral licensing effects of online token support. It thereby aims to fill the research gap on participatory popular culture and the ways in which political life permeates into everyday social media use.
