BIGSSS' joint research group with the Hans-Böckler Foundation on "Migration and Social Inequality: Opportunities for Integration Between Institutions and the Life Course" started in 2009. The group's nine PhD Fellows focus in their research on questions of identity formation among the second generation of migrants in germany, as well as on questions of inequality and structural discrimination in the education system, labour market and the transition between the two.

The research group also organized two international conferences for young researchers on "I.N.T.E.G.R.A.T.I.O.N. - Revisiting Institutional and Life-Course Perspectives on Migration" in 2011 and 2012 as well as three public workshops on migration, integration and racism.

Joint Research Group of Heinrich-Boell Foundation and BIGSSS

This interdisciplinary research group seeked to illuminate the multi-faceted nature of social inclusion and exclusion in contemporary Europe via different research angles and theoretical approaches. It dealt with both the theoretical discourse on inclusion and exclusion as well as issues which are at stake in Europe, such as citizenship, migration, regionalisation and civil society participation.
