Gonzalo receives ESPAnet Doctoral Researcher Prize 2024 for Paper on Intergenerational Cohabitation and Welfare Attitudes

We are proud to announce that Gonzalo Arevalo Iglesias has been awarded the ESPAnet Doctoral Researcher Prize 2024 for his outstanding paper, “Intergenerational Cohabitation and Welfare Attitudes among European Young Adults.” This is the second award Gonzalo has received for his remarkable research, having previously been honored with the BIGSSS Best Paper Award in May. Additionally, his paper will soon be published in the Journal of European Social Policy.

The paper explores the relationship between Intergenerational Cohabitation and Welfare Attitudes, particularly in the context of European societies. As the labour market becomes increasingly uncertain for young adults, Intergenerational Cohabitation has emerged as a common support system. Gonzalo´s research sheds new light on how living with parents weakens the association between labour market risk and welfare attitudes, suggesting that Intergenerational Cohabitation acts as a safety net for young labour market outsiders and reduces their need for public welfare. However, as Gonzalos’s research shows, this arrangement can also lead to frustration when financial dependency conflicts with societal norms, thereby increasing the desire for policies that facilitate greater independence.

Furthermore, relevant cross-national differences are found, as living with parents directly increases demand for basic income schemes only in countries where Intergenerational Cohabitation does not constitute a normative arrangement. These findings underscore the importance of considering the household context when examining the link between labour market risk and welfare attitudes and suggest that norms regarding the division of responsibilities between the family and the state may constrain the demand for state-based welfare in familialistic countries.

Congratulations to Gonzalo on this outstanding achievement!
