Abstract
The paper looks at the mechanisms of institutional discrimination in the German education system from a discourse analytical perspective. It starts with a brief account of the current situation of immigrant students in the German education system and points to the need of taking into view the institutional failures which result in the underperformance of immigrant students. Subsequently, the concept of institutional racism/discrimination and the discourse analytical approach used in the paper are introduced. The last section then presents some ideas on where institutional discrimination and discourse analysis can be analytically linked and why these links provide significant starting points for the analysis of institutional discrimination.
