PhD supervision relationships are complex. They involve duties and expectations on both sides, which are often unspoken. This can lead to misunderstandings, disagreements and, in the worst case, conflict. As a graduate school, our aim is to provide all fellows with a strong and trustful foundation for their doctoral studies. We offer comprehensive support to help fellows and supervisors fulfil their roles and foster excellent supervisory relationships.

In light of cultural and status differences in perceived rights and roles within academia, it has proven to be best practice to clarify aspects that may seem self-evident to one person but not to another, sometimes in great detail. To this end, we have developed the document “Reflections on Supervision and Research Cooperation in Doctoral Education”. Through a series of questions covering various areas, addressed to the doctoral candidate, the supervisor, or both, the document aims to clarify mutual expectations, anticipate crucial aspects of this complex relationship, and establish a strong foundation for cooperation.

The document was developed through a deliberative process involving BIGSSS faculty members and fellows, who contributed their experiences and ideas. The document is available for download here: “Reflections on Supervision and Research Cooperation in Doctoral Education”.
