28.03.2018

It is with deep personal regret that we have to announce the passing away of Prof. Dr. Stephan Leibfried. Today, March 28, 2018, our esteemed faculty member died all of a sudden at the age of 74.

Stephan Leibfried's contribution to the development and the international standing of Bremen's Social Sciences cannot be overestimated: In 1974, Stephan Leibfried became professor specialising in social policy and social administration. From 1988 onwards, he was one of the founding members of the Collaborative Research Centre 186 on “Status Passages and Risks in the Life Course”. In 1988, he was significantly involved in the founding of the ZeS (Centre for Social policy Research). In 1999, he also helped initiating the Collaborative Research Centre 597 "Transformations of the State", later heading it for 10 years, until 2014.

From 2001 on, Stephan played a major role in the founding of the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) at the University of Bremen. He always was one of BIGSSS’ most active supporters, communicating the graduate school's interests to the leadership of both universities, collecting regional, national and international political and academic support while always having an open ear and many ideas for our good development. BIGSSS is very grateful for his contributions, they clearly were a "conditio sine qua non".

We mourn a respected colleague and scientist, a visionary institution builder and a person who, in a very good way, was unique in every respect.
