One Year After Trump’s Election: Where Does America Stand? › view all
Online Panel Discussion
One year after Donald J. Trump's unexpected electoral victory, the United States continue to experience profound and dramatic changes. During his first 100 days in office, Trump signed 143 executive actions, many of which were highly consequential. These include withdrawing from the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as policy shifts affecting academic freedom, migration or gender identity rights.
This anniversary offers an opportunity to examine and contextualise these developments and explore how the American public has responded to them.
To help us understand these changes, we invited four distinguished experts:
- Thomas Zimmer is a historian and former DAAD Visiting Professor at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. His research focuses on the history of the United States and its political culture. He is one of Germany’s most well-known commentators on U.S. affairs, frequently contributing to outlets such as Tagesschau and Zeit Online.
- Barbara Lüthi is a historian and principal investigator of the project “Culture Wars and Criticism of Moralism” at the Research Institute Social Cohesion at Leipzig University. Her work focuses on cultural conflicts and historical perspectives on societal divisions.
- Lora Anne Viola is Professor at the John F. Kennedy Institute at the Freie Universität Berlin. Her research focuses on the development and design of international institutions, international relations theory, and US foreign policy.
- Lukas Hermsmeier is a freelance journalist and author based in New York. He reports on U.S. politics and culture for Zeit Online, analyse & kritik, Die Wochenzeitung, and other journals and plattforms. He also provides commentary on German politics for The New York Times.
This online panel discussion is a joint event organised by the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) and the Research Institute Social Cohesion (RISC/FGZ). It will be conducted in English and moderated by Florian König (BIGSSS) and Dr Regina Arant (BIGSSS).
