New event series: BIGSSS Brown Bag Lunch with Picture Show › view all

21.10.2025

Many of our BIGSSS fellows conduct fieldwork during their PhDs, immersing themselves in local communities and taking numerous photos as part of their research projects. However, these photos usually remain in digital storage, and only a few are occasionally included in conference presentations or publications. Yet these pictures tell exciting stories — not only about the research subject, but also about the everyday reality of research, the challenges and experiences of doctoral students. To make these invisible stories visible, we developed a new format at BIGSSS and piloted it at the end of the summer semester 2025.

During two sessions, Göksu Köktürk and Ernest Ayumu presented photos of their fieldwork in Turkey and Ghana and used them to recount their experiences. The result was personal accounts of their experiences in the field, illustrated with impressive images. The presentations were accompanied by typical local food, which we ordered and enjoyed together. As a result, a new format was born: The BIGSSS Brown Bag Lunch with Picture Show!

We will continue this series on a monthly basis in this semester. The event is open to the public, and all are welcome to join us for lunch and view the photos.
