Cornelius Puschmann and Roy Karadag join BIGSSS as Faculty


We are very happy to announce that the BIGSSS Academic Council has approved the applications for faculty membership by Prof. Dr. Cornelius Puschmann and Dr. Roy Karadag. They are now part of BIGSSS faculty and participate in the supervision of our PhD fellows, collaborate with BIGSSS members in research projects, and provide their expertise in our doctoral colloquia, seminars, workshops and mutual discussions. 

Prof. Dr. Cornelius Puschmann

Cornelius Puschmann is Professor of Communication and Media Studies with a focus on digital communication at ZeMKI and leader of the digital communication and information diversity (DCID) lab. From 2012 to 2016, he headed the DFG project “Networking, Visibility, Information? Usage motives of informal digital communication genres among scientists” at the Institute for Library and Information Science at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Between 2014 and 2015, he held a professorship for communication science with a focus on digital communication at Zeppelin University Friedrichshafen. After conducting research at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society as part of the project “Networks of Outrage: Mapping the emergence of new extremism in Europe” from March to September 2016, he moved to the Leibniz Institute for Media Research / Hans Bredow Institute at the University of Hamburg in 2016. Cornelius Puschmann has been a visiting scholar at the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford, the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Havard University and the Department of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, among others.

Dr. Roy Karadag

Dr. Roy Karadag has been a research associate at the Institute for Intercultural and International Studies (InIIS) since March 2011 and has served as its Academic Director since October 2016.

He studied Political Science and Islamic Studies at the University of Tübingen (M.A. 2006), before pursuing his doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne. There, he completed his dissertation titled "Political Capitalisms: Power, Elites and the Economy in Turkey and the Philippines", and continued as a postdoctoral researcher until early 2011.

At InIIS, Dr. Karadag has conducted and published research on the transformation of the Turkish state, Turkey’s evolving regional role since the Arab uprisings, the dynamics of violence and international order, and the historical sociology of capitalism, empires, and social policy.

From 2018 to 2021, he was a researcher in the subproject B09 "Transnational Welfare in Africa" as part of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1342 "Global Dynamics of Social Policy". Since 2022, he has co-led (with Prof. Klaus Schlichte) the follow-up project "Social Policy in Rural Africa", which continues through 2025.
