Wealth Data Science Summer/Winter Schoool (WeDSSS)

The WeDSSS team are looking for experts and project leaders for the School on Wealth Data Science Research. The School will take place on two campuses in Bremen (Germany) and Cape Town (South Africa), hosted by Constructor University and the African Center of Excellence for Inequality Research from July 1 to 12, 2024

About 15-20 students and junior researchers at each location and will create a virtual learning and research community with e-linked lectures, seminars, and computer labs between these two locations. The twelve-day School serves as a research incubator. Besides giving and attending keynotes and expert lectures, participants from 8 to 10 teams will be working on specific research projects. Each team consists of three to four junior researchers and two senior experts as project leaders, ideally with complementary expertise in social mechanisms regarding wealth accumulation and persistence and data science. The goal is to train the participating junior researchers in methods and to give them hands-on expertise in a research
project on wealth. Each team works through the whole research process with the aim of preparing a manuscript for publication.

This school should produce a topical aggregate contribution to the study of wealth. The outputs from former Schools were published as edited volumes and in scientific journals.

Pojects o this school should be on the following topic:

  • Mechanisms for the Production of Different Wealth Classes e.g. Innovation, Property Rights, Norms
  • Mechanisms for the Reproduction of Wealth e.g. Families, Geographies
  • Mechanisms for the Redistribution of Wealth e.g. Taxes, Transfers, Patronage.

As project leader/expert you design and guide a research project of your own interest that combines theory on mechanisms for the production, reproduction, or redistribution of wealth with data requirements and data science methods needed to undertake such research. Substantial in-person presence is required. Further on, you give one lecture or a hands-on workshop to all participants. Female experts are particularly encouraged to apply

The research incubator provides an opportunity to work with motivated junior researchers on a publication project. The dual location offers the potential for research that compares and contrasts North and South analyses and realities. You can choose to be involved in the assessment process for participants.

Travel expenses (economy class), accommodation on campus, and meals (half-board) are covered.

If you want to be an expert and lead a project please write to weDSSS@constructor.university:

  • Your motivation and expertise (topical focus and/or DS methods).
  • A (draft) project proposal including title, research questions, data, methods, and description (see former project descriptions). Applications as a team of two with a common project idea are
welcome. We may try to match single experts.
  • A proposal for a lecture or hands-on workshop you would like to offer.
  • A link to CV and publication list.

A call for participation, with all projects listed on the website, should be released by the end of 2023.

For further information, please see the summer school website. Pkease feel free to circulate the call
