Call for Papers reminder: BIGSSS Best Paper Awards 2021 › view all

Dear BIGSSS fellows,

The BIGSSS Best Paper Award is slowly but sure approaching an anniversary and is this time already entering its ninth round!

The award honors the author(s) of an exceptional paper combining cutting-edge research, relevance and originality. It was established to recognize fellows' hard work.

This time, the prize will again be awarded in two categories: single-authored and co-authored papers. For the second category co-authorship with doctoral fellows, postdocs and faculty members from BIGSSS or other institutions is possible, with a BIGSSS doctoral fellow as first author. The award is endowed with a prize money of € 500 for each category.

Please feel invited to submit your papers until December 31st, 2020. So let's start (or finish) writing - we are looking forward to your papers!

Details (eligibility, composition of the selection committee, etc.) are outlined in the Call for Papers.

The winner(s) will be announced at our next BIGSSS Meeting of Members in spring 2021.

Last five years' winners were:

2020: Ivan Bakalov and Lusine Grigoryan, both in the in the single-authored category with their papers “Setting Soft Power in Motion” (published in European Journal of International Relations) and “Perceived Similarity in Multiple Categorisation” (published in Applied Psychology)

2019: John Berten in the category Single-Authored Paper with his paper "Failed Indicatorisation: Defining, Comparing and Quantifying Social Policy in the ILO’s International Survey of Social Services of the Interwar Period" (published in Historical Social Research) and
           Lara Minkus in the category Co-Authored Paper (together with Emanuel Deutschmann and Jan Delhey) with the paper "A Trump Effect on the EU’s Popularity? The U.S. Presidential Election as a Natural Experiment" (published in Perspectives on Politics)

2018: Jean-Yves Gerlitz in the category Single-Authored Paper with his paper "Rising In-work Poverty in Times of Activation: Changes in the Distributive Performance of  Institutions over Three Decades, Germany 1984-2013" (published in Social Indicators Research) and
           Lara Minkus in the category Co-Authored Paper (together with Anne Busch-Heizmann) with the paper "Gender Wage Inequalities Between Historical Heritage and Structural Adjustments: A German-German Comparison Over Time" (published  in Social Politics)

2017: Andreas Katsikidis with his paper "Diversity or Ranking? Revisiting the Impact of Income Inequality on Generalized Trust"

2016: Emanuel Deutschmann with his paper "The Spatial Structure of Transnational Human Activity" (published in Social Science Research).
