Dissertation Topic
Global Norms and Local Change: Evidence from Bangladesh
Abstract
So far, models in International Relations remain with little explanatory power pertaining to human rights change at the local level. Making use of governance scholarship as analytical scope and highlighting interrelatedness in a multilevel system, this dissertation project traces the process of children's rights implementation in Bangladesh. However, not only the global and the domestic scale but in particular the grass roots level is being examined. Major findings of the case study indicate that norm addressees, the children of Bangladesh, have not been reached with legislative reforms and domestic policies. Mostly significant are complex local governance arrangements, i.e. the establishment of local structures, targeted mechanisms and the involvement of grass roots actors. The overall aim of this project is to fruitfully integrate the findings about child rights in Bangladesh into the IR research agenda on human rights.
