Dissertation Topic

Return Migration of Second-Generation Turks from Germany to Turkey.

(working title)

Abstract

In recent years, increasing numbers of second-generation Turks, who grew up in Germany, have 'returned' to their parents' country of origin, particularly to the city of Istanbul, in order to live and work there. This study examines returnees' experiences of integration in Germany, their return motivation, and their experiences of integration in Turkey. In investigating patterns and relations between these three aspects, integration will be conceptualized in four dimensions (cultural-cognitive, structural, social-interactive, identificational). This qualitative study is based on interviews with returnees in Istanbul, including people of various backgrounds, different levels of education, and voluntary as well as involuntary returnees. The main research focus is on returnees' integration experiences and strategies in Turkey.
