Jenni Winterhagen is pursuing a Ph.D. in social sciences and is specialising in migration research. She is working on "Catholic (Trans)Nationalism: Croat Immigrants in Germany, Integration and Civic Engagement" (preliminary title). Her research was funded by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.
Abstract
With her research Jenni Winterhagen contributes to the overall question how immigrant integration relates to transnationalism. On the organizational level she analyzes the Catholic pastoral guidance for foreigners, as the so called Croat missions are the most important organizations for Croat immigrants. She compares her finding with the Spanish and Italian pastoral guidance. The comparison shows how the ideological orientation of the clerus—be it liberal or nationalist—shaped integration processes and transnational activities.
