Global Integration

Field Chairs: Philipp Genschel and Peter Mayer
Field Coordinator: Rainer Baumann

Research in the field of global integration addresses the relationships between political, social and economic integration beyond the nation state. The nation state shaped these different forms of integration in the 20th century, but globalization has begun to transform the 'national constellation' into a 'post-national' one. A global society is emerging from increased cross-border exchange in the economic, security, environmental and cultural spheres. While not all regions and countries are exposed to such processes to the same extent, global governance and political integration are spreading as at the same time traditional forms of intergovernmental politics are increasingly complemented by supranational, transnational or transgovernmental forms of governance.

This field is focused on three aspects of the transformation from the national to the post-national constellation:

  1. Global integration and the emergence of global governance
  2. Effectiveness of global governance
  3. Legitimacy of global governance
