You can submit your application for a BIGSSS Fellowship via our new electronic admissions system. 

This page provides a list of what your application should encompass. If you have questions regarding the admissions process, please consult our Frequently Asked Questions after carefully reading the website.

All deadlines refer to the date of receipt of the application, not the mailing date.

Application Materials - Post-doc Fellowship

1. Personal information and statements

Including the following documents:

1.1 Personal Information Form

Please fill in our Personal Information Form.

1.2 Career Statement and Research Plan

Statement of 1 - 3 pages in which you summarize your main research contributions and interests, as well as your career plans. Reference should be made to your own fields of specialization and how they relate to the BIGSSS Thematic Fields.

1.3 Curriculum Vitae with Publication Record

This should include information on your educational and work history, language abilities and publication record.

2. Research/Publication Plan

Please provide both a short summary (100 words or less) and a longer description (up to 1,500 words) of your proposed research project and publication plan. You may either pursue a new research project or focus on making the findings from your dissertation available to an international audience in the form of a book or journal article. We seek candidates pursuing English-language publication, and ask you to specify your publication strategy (e.g. publishing house/market or journal).

Please note: by submitting your application, you consent to have your research/publication plan checked for plagiarism.

3. Certificates

3.1 Ph.D./MA/BA/Diplom/Magister certificates

Please provide a pdf-document of each degree certificate earned. If a transcript is not issued in English or German, please provide an officially certified German or English translation. If you are shortlisted we will ask you to bring a notarized (or officially certified) photocopy of each degree certificate earned.

3.2 Two Samples of Publications (if available)

Please provide two copies of texts you have published (articles or book chapters), if available. Alternatively you may include a sample chapter from your dissertation.

Please submit the texts in pdf format.

3.3 Two Letters of Recommendation

Request these from persons qualified to evaluate your academic and professional qualifications, familiar with your scholarly work and in a position to assess your potential for future academic success. At least one of these letters must be from one of your dissertation supervisors. Like all other application documents, the recommendations must arrive at BIGSSS by March 15th.

Please make sure that the referees themselves submit the letters of recommendation and that they include their signature in the scanned in document. Referees should send their letters of recommendation either directly to BIGSSS to:

If you are shortlisted we may ask you to bring the letters of recommendation in hard copy. The referee should then submit the letter either in hard copy directly to BIGSSS, or in a sealed envelope to the applicant.
