Issues of Inclusion and Exclusion in Europe in public debate:

On Monday 26th of May 2008 the Heinrich Boell Research Group cordially invites to the panel discussion "Exporting Democracy through Civil Society? European and American Democracy Assistance in the New East" with Marieluise Beck (M.P. Bundestag, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen Bremen) and Dr. Joerg Forbrig (German Marshall Fund of the United States, Bratislava) at Haus der Wissenschaft, Bremen City Centre (Sandstr. 3-5). Start: 20:00. March 2008

December 2007

On Thursday 13th of December the sociologist PD Dr. Markus Schroer will give a talk on "Inklusion/Exklusion aus der Perspektive einer Soziologie der Aufmerksamkeit" to our winter colloquium 2007/08. The event is going to take at 17:00 c.t. in room W0100 of the GSSS (FVG-West, Wiener Str., University Campus). The talk is going to be held in German language.

 

We are glad to announce that Prof. Dr. Martin Kronauer, one of the outstanding scholars in the field of research on social exclusion in Germany has agreed to serve as senior discussant and chair to our session on "Processes and phenomena of exclusion in contemporary Europe" at our international conference for young researcher on "INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION IN CONTEMPORARY EUROPE". November 2007:

On Friday, 23th of November, the Boell Group is going public: Together with Frank Düvell, Senior Reseacher Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS), Oxford University and Cornelia Gunßer, an expert for migration policy at the Refugee Council of Hamburg (Flüchtlingsrat Hamburg), the Boell working group is going to discuss the situation of migrants and refugees at the external borders of the European Union with a wider audience.

The official title of the event is "Der Europäische Kampf gegen Flüchtlinge". The discussion will be in German.
The discussion on 23rd of November will start at 20:15 at Kulturzentrum Lagerhaus, Schildstrasse 12-19 (next to the pub), Bremen

 

Prof. Gerard Delanty from Sussex University (GB), one of the co-authors of the book "Rethinking Europe: Social theory and the implications of Europeanization", approved to provide a keynote lecture to our international conference "INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION IN CONTEMPORARY EUROPE" which is going to take place 11th to 13th of April 2008 at the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg in Delmenhorst (near Bremen). On 1st of November PD Dr. Paula Irene Villa from Hannover University visited our colloquium and gave a talk on the social type of foreignness. The official title of her presentation was "Der, die, das Fremde: Soziologische Überlegungen zu einem 'Sozialtypus'"

 

 

October 2007:

Sebastian is organising a meeting of the working group "AG Wilder Osten" of Heinrich Böll Foundation together with another student of Bremen University. The topic of the meeting is EAST-WEST MIGRATION: HISTORICAL AND CURRENT DIMENSIONS. It is going to take place from Thursday 18th to Sunday 21rst of October. At 4th of October we obtained official approval of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg for hosting and cofinancing our international conference for young researchers INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION IN CONTEMPORARY EUROPE which is going to take place on 11th to 13th of April 2008.  All Ph.D. students and Postdocs dealing with issues which are smiliar or close to ours or even beyond are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract until December 15 2007. September 2007:

 

Sebastian took part in two international conferences in Lancaster (GB) and Warsaw (PL) which were thematically very close to major fields of his dissertation. At both conference he presented aspects of his research on strategies of regional development in Poland.

 

 

August 2007:

 

On the 31st of July and 1st of August 2007 the Boell Group held a seminar at the Boell CAMPUS 2007.
The seminar with the title "Lissabon & Co. - Die europäische Dimension unserer Arbeitswelt" explored visions and concepts as well as realities and challenges of employment in contemporary Europe.

July 2007:

 

Sina attended the Konstanzer Meisterklasse 2007, an an international convention of renowned scholars and a group of doctoral and postdoctoral students from the cultural and social sciences. 

 

 

June 2007:

 

Nadya is going to London for a research stay until October 2007. She is staying with Dr. Alice Bloch at the Department of Sociology, City University London and will do literature research and fieldwork (expert interviews) on the British case of labour market integration of highly qualified migrants/refugees.

 

 

May 2007:

 

Sina organised and conducted the conference "Inclusion/Exclusion" at the University of Basel together with a research associate of the Institute of Sociology in Basel.  Click here for the official conference call (only in German).

 

 

April 2007

Sebastian will be staying in Cracow at the Institute of European Studies of the Jagiellonian University from April 15th to June 2007. He will visit various Polish regions (voivodships) and conduct interviews with experts and practicioners in the field of regional development in Poland. 

 

 

March 2007

From March until June, Susanne holds a honorary visiting appointment in Women's Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (United States). She can be reached at stoensmann(_a_)wisc.edu.

 

At the conference for young researchers "Migration: eine Herausforderung für Europa", organized by the University of Münster at 29./30.03.2007, Nadya does a presentation on the topic: "Arbeitslos trotz hoher Qualifikation? - Zur Situation von hochqualifizierten Migrantinnen und Migranten in Deutschland und Großbritannien."

 

 

February 2007

Susanne and Sebastian went on a week-long study trip to Riga (Latvia) in late February. The trip was a meeting of the Working Group "Wilder Osten" of the Heinrich-Boell-Foundation and encompassed sixteen BA,  MA, and doctoral students. The group met with various individuals, state and non-state organizations. The trip was organized by Susanne and Katja Wezel from the  Heinrich-Boell Working Group on “Overcoming Dictatorships and Establishment of Civil Society in Europe“, University of Heidelberg.

 

 

On Thursday, February 15th 2007, we organised a small workshop at the GSSS on practical aspects of qualitative research.

 

 

January 2007

 On Wednesday, January 23rd 2007, we organised a roundtable with GSSS fellows on the current Unterschicht debate in Germany. You can download the results of the discussions here (only German).

 

 

December 2006

Jan-Hendrik takes a "sabatical" between December 2006 and June 2007 in order  be able to fully concentrate on a project which he coordinates with the voluntary association "Zeit & Haben" in Bremen.

 

 

September 2006

Between September 2006 and March 2007 Sina works with her supervisor Prof. Urs Stäheli at the Institute of Sociology, University of Basel (Switzerland). She also organises a conference in Basel on "Inclusion/Exclusion", which is going to take place, there, in May 2007. Click here for the official conference call (only in German).

May 2006

On Wednesday, May 24th 2006, our research group "Risks of Exclusion and Strategies of Inclusion in an Expanded Europe" was officially introduced at the "Promovierenden Forum" of the Heinrich-Boell Foundation in Berlin. Prof. Dr. Karin Gottschall, the director of the GSSS and spokeswoman of the research group, presented the strucuture of the GSSS and the rationale of our working group to the representatives and to other scholarship holders of the Heinrich-Boell Foundation. Afterwards we presented our Ph.D. projects to the audience and answered questions regarding our main aims and objectives.
